ABOUT US

Opalus of Rochester opened in the summer of 2019 to provide on-site lapidary and gem cutting services to jewelers and the general public.

The shop specializes in jewelry design, color gemstone faceting, gemstone design, Australian opal cutting, and the unusual gemstones of North America's Great Lakes region. It also stocks a wide selection of freshwater pearls.

Opalus is known for its fine selection of cut chlorastrolites, Michigan's state gem, and prospects for new gem rough in Copper Country each year.

In 2021, Opalus began offering private instruction in lapidary and color gemstone faceting to promote appreciation of the art and provide and entry point for hobbyists and the aspiring professional cutter.
